Painting in Paradise powered by Atlantis Resort and the Pottery Studio offered me an experience I won’t soon forget.
Imagine an evening of wine, music, an easel and your very own canvas to free yourself? Now stop imagining and let it be known that this experience is real. Whether you’re looking for something for girl’s night or a date to impress that special someone this event is the
Hosted in the lobby outside of the Pottery Studio, the Painting in Paradise event seated 1o eager students and artists in their own right. Directed by the refreshing and patient teacher Ivanna, students were instructed to study the Amos Ferguson painting erected in front of them and draw their very own inspiration from it. Now, with your own sketchpad, pencil, paint and easel, you’re given some time to sketch 8 hibiscus flowers and then to mimic those flowers on your canvas to later be painted.
I must admit that I was afraid in the beginning.
‘I can’t even draw. What am I doing here? I can’t even paint. I don’t even know lines and color mixtures. I am going to look so stupid by the end of this’, I thought. But my nerves were soon eased by Ivanna who encouraged her students to be themselves and to be honest with what they paint. There was no pressure. No time limit (there was one but you didn’t even feel it)!
We moved from sketching to putting that work on a canvas. I went big with 12 flowers on my board and got carried away. Everyone in the room was totally married to their own experience. Everyone moved at their own pace and painted what was perfect to them. It was a great experience to watch people be honest with themselves and create something special.
Grace, 6 years old, was the youngest in the class. There’s just something special about watching a child paint. There’s something beautiful about watching a child feel free to be themselves. As adults, we lose that feeling sometimes.
